I generally go for the slightly unusual in literature, and tend to be drawn toward fantasy. Some of my favorites include Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials and Robin Hobb’s Farseer and Tawny Man trilogies. I also enjoy odd books like those by Neil Gaiman, and some by Tom Robbins, such as Still Life With Woodpecker. I have been a long-time fan of Stephen King, and I enjoyed Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series (though I did not find them stellar works of literature). However, I also can find joy in a light, humorous “chick-lit” book like Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic series, or be drawn into a touching dramatic tale like Elizabeth Berg’s Year of Pleasures or some of Ian McEwan’s novels. I have recently been drawn towards historical fiction as well, starting when I read Geraldine Brooks’s Year of Wonders. I enjoy non-fiction that reads as fiction (Krakauer’s Into the Wild and Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods spring to mind), and enjoy a good ghost story be it fictional or real. I also enjoy many of the literary classics - Poe, Dickens, Dumas, Twain, and Austen to name a few.
